Lourdes Academy Promotes Career Awareness



Lourdes Academy students visit Fox Valley Technical College and try their
skill on a lathe as part of the 2016-17 Manufacturing Scholars Program

In partnership with local businesses, the Lourdes Academy Scholars program will continue to assist students in the career exploration process during the 2017-18 school year by:

Visiting with businesses and talking with professionals working in the field.
Narrowing down areas of interest to better make choices about colleges and careers.
Learning how the skills and knowledge they are learning in school can translate into future careers.
Gaining a better understanding of the businesses that make up our community and economy.

2017-18 Schedule (Subject to change)
Unless otherwise specified, Scholars visits will be held on the afternoons of the Lourdes Academy noon dismissal days.
September 13 - Dental Scholars
On the tour: Wihlm Dental, Winnebago Oral Surgery, Sawyer Creek Orthodontics
What goes into a healthy, beautiful smile? From cleaning and straightening to extractions,  students will learn how dentists, orthodontists and oral surgeons work together to care for teeth.

December 13 - Veterinary Scholars
On the tour: Valley Veterinary Hospital
Dr. John Lorfeld will present students with information pertaining to the variety of careers available in the field of veterinary medicine, the training and skills required for various positions, and what qualities veterinarians are looking for when hiring new employees. Students will also tour behind the scened of how the clinic operates.

February 14 - Community Planning Scholars
On the tour: The Wisconsin Herd Arena
Students will tour the new Wisconsin Herd Arena and learn how city officials attract and retain businesses. Participants will have the opportunity to hear presentations by such Wisconsin Herd and Oshkosh City officials as:

Greg Pierce - Owner of the Wisconsin Herd Arena
Steve Brandes - President of the Wisconsin Herd (Lourdes Academy parent)
Mark Rohloff - Oshkosh City Manager

Jason White - CEO of Greater Oshkosh Economic Foundation (Lourdes Academy parent)
March 14 - Business Scholars
On the tour: Ripon Athletic (NFL outfitters)
Ripon Athletics makes uniforms for high school, college and professional sports teams, as well as letterman jackets and other apparel.  Peter Derleth Lourdes Academy parent and co-president of Ripon Athletics, will lead students on a tour of the facility and observe 2018 uniforms being manufactured before they are seen by athletes. Mr. Derleth will discuss leadership in a family owned business, the importance of communication, business & product development, and how a small local company competes and works with such major companies as Nike and Adidas.

April 11 - Music Scholars
On the tour: Janet Planet & Tom Washataka's Steel Moon Recording Studio
Musicians Janet Planet and Tom Washatka will host students at their very own Steel Moon Recording Studio to show all aspects of music recording from the stage to the sound booth.
